A Date with a Great Wheel!

So many of the guild members have been looking forward to our Guild Gathering this June as we were going to get to have a go on a Great Wheel! Our anticipation was not misplaces as we had such an excellent day!!

Penelope Hemingway is the teacher and crafter resident at the Yorkshire Museum of Farming. www.theknittinggenie.com

She arrived early with her wheel and delicious fibres prepped for spinning.

The talk she gave was so informative, giving a history of the wheel, and using illustrations to show that the design of the wheel hasn’t changed for centuries. It was fascinating!

It was mesmerising to what Penelope spinning. It looked effortless and the sound of the wheel and fibres clicking was equally satisfying. Inspirational!!

Then, much to the delight of the spinners amongst us, we were allowed to “play”!

It was just lovely to try, and a number of us are now coveting a wheel of our own! Although, personally, I would have to move house to accommodate one – which is a shame!

Thank you so much Penelope, you were amazing and your talk was brilliant. Thank you so much for coming to entertain us!
